Janelle and Alex were in Singapore for Christmas so they came up to Penang for a quick holiday. It was great to see them and catch up and especially fun because of their love of Penang food (it is sort of a culinary capital :-) ). Alex is Hokkien (which is the dominant Chinese group in Penang) so eating with him gave a cool insider perspective - different from John's inside perspective as a foreigner who grew up here.

And here we are in front of a kongsi (one of the few tourist things I hadn't done in Penang before)- it's a Chinese clan community center- where the main course of business is to worship the ancestors, provide entertainment for the community, and offer loans to clan members who need financial help.
