Some new Sam pics

Sam- sleeping like a baby

I really love to look at his little hands, wrists and arms. It is amazing to me that I was one that small and that he will most likely be bigger than me someday.
Is this the kind of photo that Sam will never really enjoy having shown? But seriously- this is what we call explosive pooh. I think a word could be said here about the number and amount of grossish fluids that Sam emits in a day, but I'll spare you that. Suffice it to say that the day this particular pooh occurred, John and I were walking out in public and when we realized what had happened covered his back with a burp cloth and hoped that no nice old ladies would stop to kiss him (as is the custom here) and then recoil once they saw how thoroughly he had soiled himself.

This reminds me- I've been meaning to commend Moroccans for their love of babies and their graciousness to us as parents. I really feel honored by them. One time Sam was crying in a restaurant when we were in Marrakech with the Zinns and the guy who worked at the door asked to hold him and he held him for 20 minutes or so- telling me about his children and showing off Sam to the diners coming in.

Often when we're out- we're stopped so people can kiss Sam's hands or cheeks and occasionally feet. Usually it is older women and teenage girls. Also, young children are encouraged by their parents to kiss him. It's so sweet and I really like the custom because isn't that just what everyone wants to do when they see a little baby- kiss him/her?

Even when Moroccans are giving us parenting advice , they are gracious, and I appreciate that too. We do so many things differently from them and yet they do not come across as judgmental at all. Here is a short list of things we do "wrong"
-we don't swaddle Sam all day long (which should be done until 4 months)
-we take Sam outside (forbidden until 3 or 4 months I think)
-we dress Sam in just one layer (should be all covered in blankets)
-we hold Sam in a variety of positions that Moroccans wouldn't (like just under his legs and with his head against our chest without a straightened back)This is the onesie John made for Sam for Mother's Day- cute, huh?

Okay- so my family has this tradition about birthday shirts. My parents bought them for my sister and I in our first year of life- shirts from the place we were living and in an adult size- and then took our picture in them each year.
John and I finally found Sam's bday shirt- a shirt that has the Moroccan star and says in French "representing Marocco" plus some random thing about Rabouz for life? which is a bit odd and we're not sure what that means though I looked up Rabouz and found that at least one definition is the fire stoker air thingy- perhaps more research needs to be done.

Anyway here are the two best pics and we'd like to hear which you like better... (also, how cool is it that Sam at two months can stand up like this on his own-it looks like he's ready to walk, huh?)

fantastic pictures! Caitlin, I remember us chatting about family traditions (including your shirt one) whilst driving across Banda. Seems like another world now!

My vote is for the one of Sam standing up- he has a super-cute expression on his face.

What a cool tradition! I love it!

I'm so glad to hear how things are settling down out there, and so glad you've got parents nearby. Sam is ADORABLE.

I like the second because of the star but choose the one that say's Representing Morroco, that's really fun.

Ooops, I thought we were choosing between 2 different shirts, not pictures. So, I pick the 1st picture but for no particulat reason.
